Nasopharynx cancer is much more common in certain parts of South Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa. In some parts of China there are as many as 21 cases per 100,000 people.

The risk of NPC increases slowly throughout life, but it can occur in people of any age, including children.

Scientists have found risk factors that make a person more likely to developed nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC). These include:
- Male
- NPC is most common in southern China (including Hong Kong), Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
- very high in salt-cured fish and meat.
- Family History
- Smoking

Infection with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has been linked to NPC. Scientists are trying to create an EBV vaccine, but at this time there's no known way to prevent this infection.
