Vaccine Introduction:
Hepatitis A is a serious liver disease caused by the Hepatitis A virus, which is a filterable virus transmitted between people through contact with the feces of an infected person. Hepatitis A can lead to liver failure and death. Infected individuals may have no symptoms at all or only mild flu-like or gastrointestinal symptoms, but it can cause acute hepatitis, presenting symptoms such as fever, fatigue, and jaundice. Patients often do not show symptoms during childhood, but symptoms may gradually appear upon reaching adulthood.
Since it is possible to transmit Hepatitis A without showing symptoms, vaccination is an effective way to prevent infection. Since 1996, the United States has recommended that citizens receive the Hepatitis A vaccine. Since then, the number of reported cases in the U.S. has decreased from approximately 31,000 cases to fewer than 1,500 cases annually.
